What does ADVENTURE mean?

Welcome Adventure Friends!

You have no idea how happy I am to publish my first blog post where I get the pleasure to explain what adventure actually means and how I came up with the name Degrees of Adventure!

So let’s dive in to adventure, it is a word that most people have heard of, social media throws around but there might be confusion around what it is exactly.  It is time to clear that up.

What does it mean?

If you take the research approach and look up the meaning, adventure is:

a bold undertaking, in which hazards are to be encountered, and the issue is staked upon unforeseen events; a daring feat.

I like that definition but it is a bit formal for my taste. I’m not really the formal type. So, I’m going to jazz it up with what it means to me.  Here goes!

Adventure is finding the explorer within, stepping out of your comfort zone to break your routine to do experiences to feel alive, vibrant and create stories you can’t help but share; some activities will be bold/daring while others will allow you to simply recover a bit of the carefree play needed by all and will just stretch your perception of where you belong in the world.

I don’t know about you but I prefer the second one. It makes the thrills of adventure not just limited to those on a gap year, full- time travelers or adrenaline junkies.

Adventure is NOT limited to…

going to a different country, an exotic destination, conquering a fear but about the best way to energize yourself with excitement in that moment whether it is a new experience or not.

Don’t get me wrong I love to travel to new places and do things I have never done before. I would spend a large chunk of my money on it and my bucket list is filled with exactly that. There is exhilaration that can’t be beat. No question about it! Adventure is available for those who seek it in the way that best energizes them and fit in to their life.

Here is where Degrees of Adventure comes in…

If you haven’t guessed by now, I believe adventure is not limited to just one type of activity or location. It comes in different forms and levels from the mega (trekking Mount Everest) to the everyday (hiking a new trail in your backyard). But like the range of temperature on a thermostat, the same range or degrees are available to you on the adventure scale. (You see what I did there?) The DEGREES OF ADVENTURE exist to allow exciting experiences to be a central part of your world. This is why I have labeled my movement just that and hope you join me on the journey!

Now, it is time to challenge YOU. Tell me what adventure means to you and how you feel about my definition…I promise I’m reading every comment so introduce yourself!

Love this! Your definition is definitely better and I totally agree! Adventure could be many things, and to me its something that pushes my limits a little bit and pushes me to do something different. Even blogging is an adventure!

Love the post. As the saying goes Experience is a good teacher. Going to a place or doing something we haven’t done before is good experience to adventure lovers out there.

I agree with your definition! I find it adventurous when I head out into a new area of Chicago or even when I find a place tucked away in an area I’ve visited hundreds of times.

Great definition! I guess for me adventure means exploring new and uncertain things! I find adventure in day to day as well as bigger things such as traveling, moving to a new country etc!
